I had a little accident, hitting the wall after getting in my oil from a pushed out oil filter seal. There are a couple discussions in the forums about that.
Anyway, my son and I pulled the motor out of the car, so it can go to the body shop. When pulling the steering cross link off (as it goes through the oil pan), it was covered with oil - -which one would expect. However, the oil on the cross link had metal fillings on it. Closer inspection showed that the link had the top of it rubbing on the top of the hole in the oil pan. There's just a little rubbing wear on the link and top of hole going through the oil pan. I've had this engine and pan in the car many times for many years without issue, so I'm wondering if it was installed in the correct orientation.
Does there exist a diagram showing the correct orientation of the link properly installed? If not, does anyone know for sure what side of the bar the castle nuts go on, And which is the left side and right side of the cross link.
Can I carefully use a flap disc to take 1/16 (0.085) off the top of the bar without creating a dangerous situation? The cross-link bar appears plenty thick enough to where 1/16" would not affect the integrity of the steering part for a straight-line car. I don't know I'd consider if the car was turning left at 200mph in NASCAR, however carefully removing 1/16" for drag racing seems doable.
